Mileage Program Rules and Guidelines

Individuals riding side saddle on the trail, horse/mule packing, in competitive trail events, Endurance Competitions, Hunter Paces, mounted hunting, wagon trains, judged pleasure rides, etc. earn credit for miles completed towards a cumulative recognition award. The program is intended to encourage members to ride their equines aside outside on trails. This recognizes activities beyond parades, demonstrations, and showing.

Mileage is cumulative for the rider. Multiple equines may be used by the same rider to achieve miles. If the rider and horse are registered in the Awards Program, they remain eligible to receive the appropriate points in Non-Arena or Non-Competitive categories in addition to earning cumulative mileage.

For trail riding as an individual where you are conditioning yourself and the horse for at least 5 miles, you receive credit for 5 miles. You may receive actual miles covered for general trail riding up to 10 miles. Trail rides that exceed 10 miles in length still only accrue a maximum of 10 miles. This may include pleasure trail riding, conditioning rides prior to a competition, mounted hunting, etc.

It can be difficult for people to determine how far they have ridden. You may be able to ride a trail with known, marked mileage. For occasions where this is not possible, the following general guidelines have been established:

  • 3 hrs walking equals 10 miles
  • 2 hours moderate trotting or running walk equals 10 miles
  • 1 hr of trot/canter/ gallop equals 10 miles.

You may learn to estimate your own horse's speeds with some accuracy by riding over a measured, set distance and timing yourself. Over a one mile distance, if you are taking this much time, you are going this fast:

(Time for one mile, Miles per hour)

  • 2 minutes, 30 mph
  • 5 minutes, 12 mph
  • 10 minutes, 6 mph
  • 15 minutes, 4 mph
  • 20 minutes, 3 mph
  • 30 minutes, 2 mph

Mileage measured by GPS is not accepted as GPS is not accurate under all conditions (heavily wooded areas, exceptional altitude changes, heavily mountainous areas where an adequate number of satellites cannot be acquired, etc.).

For organized events where the miles have been measured and advertised, the participant receives credit for the advertised miles. This may be advertised mileage trail rides for pleasure, fund raising rides (St. Jude rides, etc.), wagon train events that covered a set number of miles for a particular leg.

For an actual competition over measured miles & measured time where strategy & judging came into play (competitive trail ride, endurance ride, judged pleasure, Hunter pace), you receive 1.5 times the actual miles advertised for the ride. A 50 mile endurance ride is worth 75 miles credit in the program. You receive bonus miles because you must use strategy, you are moving at a working pace & you have the chance of being eliminated by the vets or judges. If you are eliminated or pulled, you receive credit for a 10 mile training ride regardless of the distance covered.

Mileage recognition awards are awarded for the following mileage achievements:

  • 250 miles
  • 500miles
  • 1000 miles
  • 1500 miles
  • 2,500 miles
  • 5,000 miles
  • And every 2,500 miles thereafter.

Mileage should be submitted monthly, but not less than quarterly. All mileage for the previous year must be submitted no later than January 15th of the following year in order to count. Mileage must be submitted on the appropriate form, available from the Point Secretary or online at www.sidesaddle.com.
